I think the major theme of this paragraph is emptiness and gaudiness. The party is very fancy and luxury. However it doesn't say about how happy people are to be there in the party. So I think the paragraph's theme is emptiness and gaudiness.
What is Nick’s cardinal virtue? What is ironic about this?
According to Nick, his cardinal virtue is honesty. However it is ironic because he just said that even though he wrote 'Love, Nick' at the end of the letter, the only thing he thinks about Jordan Baker was how she played tennis and her perspiration appeared on her upper lip. This is not love, but he said 'love, nick' at the end of the letter. So this means he is not honest.
