Analysis
ONE’S-SELF I sing—a simple, separate Person;
Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-masse
Of Physiology from top to toe I sing;
Not physiognomy alone, nor brain alone, is worthy for the muse—I say the Form complete is worthier far;
The Female equally with the male I sing.
Of Life immense in passion, pulse, and power
Cheerful—for freest action form’d, under the laws divine,
The Modern Man I sing.
I think this poem is talking about the needs of people to be perfect.
Not only the face or intelligence is important, their personality and internal healthiness is needed too. Also, I can see Walt Whitman thinking that equality of men and women is important.
In this poem, Walt Whitman’s dreams and hopes are inside.
He sees people all together as a whole. And he wants others to see other people like that too.
His world is shown in this short poem that is not even 100 words.
The poem itself was very hard to understand and also in one sentence, it was containing lots of other meanings too that I had to analyze. So I had to find the meaning of the poem in the internet and after getting some help, I felt better when I saw it.
It requires a lot of time to get the true meaning of the poem and after getting it, I am sure that everyone would like it.
