The Two Fathers - Nathan Price and Allie Fox.
There were two men who wanted to leave the United States and live a new life in the new world. They
both dreamed a better life and thought the world was on their side. One man was Allie Fox, the main character in a movie called ‘The Mosquito Coast’. He was the boss of the Fox family and made almost all of the decisions. The other man was Nathan Price. He was the father in a book called ‘The Poisonwood Bible’. He also, gave no right to choose or to decide to his family. He lived as he wanted and his family had to move as he went.
Allie was a genius inventor who made wonderful products with poor materials. He was displeased with the society of U.S.A. He thought students weren’t getting the real education and believed United States was a failure. So, he and his family left his home and went to the Mosquito Coast in Central America to build a Utopia with his ice making machine. However things didn’t go as he wanted. He succeeds with making a new civilization but the people left the village and went to the preacher called Reverend Spellgood. Then his huge ice machine exploded and blew up the whole town and finally he got killed by the preacher.
In the other hand, Nathan Price was a preacher that thought God was everything. God was his teacher, his father and believed the bible told him how he should live. The reason why he left his home and went to Congo was the bible too, he saw the part that God tells people to go to Congo and save the miserable people and make them believe God as well. So hebrings his whole family there without asking their opinion. He thought as soonas he tell the existence of God, the people will follow him and be his men, but people didn’t wanted to and refused. Eventually, Nathan gave infelicity to the native people and to his family.
As you can see, Nathan and Allie had lots of similarities between them. First, they left their home and went to a new place. Second, they believed everything would go fine but they both faced problems. Nathan found out people won’t come as he wanted and Allie sees his village getting destroyed because of his ice machine. Finally, they
both don’t care about their family’s opinions and believes that they are right. Allie doesn’t listen to his family and commands them to stay in Central America even they had no place to go and Nathan does not give up preaching and won’t go to U.S even his family wants and asks to.
Even these two characters were very similar; they were different in the same time. For example, Nathan went to Congo because God asked to. He thought God had given him a mission that he had to do. He thought United States had no special problems itself. However Allie was disappointed with the society and decided to leave U.S and made a new world for the people. So Allie and Nathan both embarked U.S.A but the reasons were quite different. One wanted to follow God and one wanted to make a new world.
‘The Mosquito Coast’ and “The Poisonwood Bible’ both described families leaving their home and heading to a new environment because of their fathers but eventually became different stories with different obstacles and lessons.
