The Death of 'Patrice Lumumba'
There was a young man who dreamed the independence of Congo and finally at June 1960 when he achieved it, he became the first prime minister of his country. The man’s name was Patrice Lumumba.
When Congo was under Belgian’s control, he wished for days of Congo itself. Not under the rules of the Belgians, with the rules that were made by the Congolese and the government that was made by the Congolese, running for their people.
That young man protested bravely and at last, Congo became independent at the year of 1960. Joseph Kasa-Vubu became the president and with a powerful support of the people of Congo, Lumumba became the first prime minister.
At September 5th 1960, President Kasa-Vubu dismissed him by using his powers and with the help of CIA. It was a shock to Lumumba and to Congo because he had lots of supporters. So Lumumba got some help from the National Assembly and tried to dismiss Kasa-Vubu as the president of Congo. However it was canceled when Lumumba got arrested by the Joeseph Motubu(he made
an agreement with Kasa-Vubu and carried out a coup d’état)
Lumumba asked the UN help after Motubu’s coup d’état andcould get some protection from them, however the US, Kasa-Vubu and Motubu were looking for the chance to kill him. One day, Lumumba was arrested and got killed when he tried to escape and go to the place where his supporters
were.
The Lumumba’s death was a big lost for Congo. The Americans did not understand this and said ‘Lumumba was nothing special neither than he was one of the protesters of Congo.’ However that was the key point. He was one of the people who strongly dreamed for Congo’s independent and wanted Congo to be a whole country itself. He was like the role and the symbol for the Congolese. The lost of him could mean the lost of hope of Congo.
